Vintage Southern Backyard Wedding in Cary, NC

It’s Wedding Feature Wednesday at Southern Bride & Groom! Today we’re excited to share Colleen and Fletcher’s vintage Southern backyard wedding in Cary, NC, shot by Nancy Ray Photography.

Colleen and Fletcher attended the same high school, but didn’t end up meeting until mutual friends introduced them the summer after their freshman year of college. The couple dated for several years, and after graduation, Colleen began preparing to go to Spain for her master’s degree. A few weeks before she left, she and Fletcher went out to watch a meteor shower. He popped the question while they were lying in the back of his truck bed looking at the sky!

The couple wanted their wedding to take place somewhere that really meant something to the two of them. They decided on a group of three houses in Cary, all right next to one another and all family owned! They’d already had many wonderful memories there, and thought it would be neat to add another big one – their wedding day – to the list.

The couple selected a color palette of green, blush, ivory and gold – inspired by the bride’s love of green – which perfectly complemented the backyards and their vintage Southern garden theme. The theme was carried throughout the mismatched bridesmaids’ dresses, the stunning hanging floral arrangements by Expressions of Love, and the rustic reception decor.

To make their wedding day all the more special, the couple involved friends and family members as much as possible. The groom’s father performed the ceremony, Colleen’s brother played the bagpipes (in a traditional Scottish kilt!), and their good friend DJ’d the reception. The couple also included subtle touches – like signs in Spanish to honor Colleen’s time spent in Spain – to make their wedding incredibly personal and charming.

Thanks to Nancy Ray Photography for sharing these beautiful images, and congratulations to Colleen and Fletcher!

The 2nd Charleston NotWedding Event

What’s not to love about Charleston?! It’s the quintessential essence of what the South is supposed to be, so when Southern Bride & Groom was invited to take part in the 2nd Charleston NotWedding event, we jumped at the chance!

Charleston has always been a great travel destination, and brides-to-be love it for weddings as well! Since the ladies behind Southern Bride & Groom pride ourselves on being one of the leading wedding planning resources, we couldn’t help but scope out the best of the best in the Charleston area.

The Charleston NotWedding was held at the Cotton Dock at Boone Hall Plantation in Mount Pleasant, which is a living and working plantation situated right on the water. From the moment you enter the grounds – with its massive trees, horses grazing, and the sun peeking through the branches – you are transported to an idyllic Southern locale, and you’re treated with a beautiful view of the gardens ahead (it’s no wonder Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds were married here!). The NotWedding, a bridal show alternative, began with a mock wedding ceremony on the Cotton Dock, followed by networking for the brides-to-be and their beloved beaus – it was a casual, free-flowing night along the river. The outside venue was perfectly complemented by the rustic, “Wild & Free” theme of the event. Check out this video of the 2nd Charleston NotWedding, shot by James McCoy Films.

After the conclusion of the NotWedding, the famous Belmond Charleston Place Hotel, located in the heart of Charleston’s historic district, hosted us. The hotel, situated on the corners of Market, Meeting and the shopping-frenzied King Street, features 435 luxurious guest rooms rich in substance, yet judiciously understated and with a special knack for attention to detail. Belmond Charleston Place features the most comprehensive banquet and conference services in the area, including the Grand Ballroom, which is over 14,000 square feet, the Grand Hall, and several beautiful outdoor courtyards.

Following a suggestion from a local, Southern Bride & Groom experienced a true Lowcountry bistro brimming with contagious energy along East Bay Street in S.N.O.B. I was quite curious to try a place called SNOB, but came to find the name is an acronym for the restaurant’s location – Slightly North of Broad. To keep with the lowcountry vibe, I felt it was only fitting to have a go at the Fried Chicken & Watermelon Salad with locally grown mixed greens, Split Creek Farm feta, spiced pecans and a balsamic vinaigrette.

Southern Destination Wedding at The Shoals Club at Bald Head Island

It’s Wedding Feature Wednesday at Southern Bride & Groom! Today, we’re thrilled to share Carrie and Clark’s Southern destination wedding at The Shoals Club at Bald Head Island, with gorgeous photos from Anne Liles Photography.

Carrie and Clark met through mutual friends the summer after Carrie’s first year of law school. He claims that she fell in love with his sweet dance moves, and while she says that isn’t entirely true, they’ve been together ever since.

Every Christmas, Carrie and Clark exchange ornaments, but Christmas of 2012 was extra special. Clark gave Carrie a glass ornament with a diamond ring painted on it, and when she looked up from opening the box, he was down on one knee! Of course, she said yes, and the couple began planning their May 2014 wedding.

Carrie and Clark knew they wanted to get married at the beach, and as soon as they visited the Shoals Club, they knew it was the perfect fit for their blush, white, and khaki wedding. With soft touches of gold, their casual, Southern-themed wedding came to life. The bride included many personal details, like the plethora of monograms, customized koozies, hand-lettered signs, and DIY projects, but the most special touch was that she wore her late mother’s wedding band to honor her on the big day.

The couple used several members of the SB&G Family to make their wedding day perfect, including: Shoals Club, Cute Buttons Gift & Paper Boutique, and CE Rental. Please enjoy the beautiful photographs of Carrie and Clark’s wedding day, courtesy of Anne Liles Photography.

ISES 2014 Trinity Awards

Last month, the Greater Triangle NC Chapter of ISES hosted the 2014 Trinity Awards — a program which honors the outstanding work of our talented local event professionals (ISES stands for the International Special Events Society). This over-the-top event is one that we look forward to each year — one of the highlights of the summer!

This year’s event was held at the Carolina Country Club in Raleigh, NC, one of the most prestigious country clubs in the state and a beautiful setting for an event. The club normally reserves events for its members, so it was a real treat to be able to experience this gala event here!

Upon arrival, and checking in on the “red carpet,” we enjoyed cocktails and hors d’oeuvres while being regaled with fabulous entertainment. Dancers from Elevate, our local dance and live entertainment troupe, created paintings live by using their bodies as a paintbrush, right before our eyes! The pinnacle of pre-awards entertainment was an enthralling Video DJ “spin-off.”

Walking into the ballroom for the awards program was the best moment of the evening – everyone “Ooohs” and “Ahhh”s over the lush and extravagant florals designed by Fresh Affairs, one of our favorite Raleigh wedding and event florists. We were greeted by dueling pianos and a flash mob dance performance as we took our seats.

As we enjoyed an incredible dinner, we watched the awards, and also got to witness the installation of the Board of Directors for the coming year, which will be led by Ryan Pflumm. We know Ryan very well as he is a co-owner of SPIN, one of the top wedding DJs in the Raleigh Area and a preferred vendor of SB&G! Congrats, Ryan!

Romantic Winter Wedding at The Washington Duke Inn in Durham, NC

It’s Wedding Feature Wednesday at Southern Bride & Groom! Today we’re excited to share Stephanie and Adam’s romantic winter wedding at The Washington Duke Inn in Durham, NC, with gorgeous photos from Riley MacLean Photography.

Stephanie and Adam met as children through their parents, who all worked at Duke and were members of the same country club. About 20 years later, Stephanie ran into her childhood crush at Tobacco Road, when she was on a date with someone else! The bride said, “He was just as adorable as I remembered him, so when my date was in the restroom, I went over and struck up a conversation.”

Adam had a grand plan of proposing to Stephanie at the beach, but the weather didn’t cooperate. Instead of popping the question outside, he got down on one knee while Stephanie was looking the other way and asked if she had any cold champagne. When she turned around to ask why they would need champagne, he was kneeling and asking her to be his wife. Of course, Stephanie said yes!

Adam and Stephanie worked with Amanda Scott of A Swanky Affiar to plan their winter wedding. The bride said their planning experience was fantastic thanks to their thorough and experienced coordinator! Amanda introduced the couple to several wonderful vendors who helped make their big day dreams come to life, including a Durham theme that was used throughout the wedding details – from the invitations to the venue – since the bride and groom are both from Durham.

The couple selected a purple, gold and silver color palette with subtle pops of red, lavender, green, and pink, which came to life in the floral arrangements from Tre Bella and perfectly complemented The Washington Duke Inn’s Presidential Ballroom.

Adam and Stephanie used many talented members of the SB&G Family, including: A Swanky Affair, The Washington Duke Inn & Golf Club, The University Club, and Tre Bella Flowers.

Enjoy these gorgeous photos of Adam and Stephanie’s big day, courtesy of Riley MacLean Photography!

Creative Entertainment Ideas for an NC Wedding

Entertainment makes an event truly memorable, so besides having wonderful music, consider throwing some curveballs to surprise and delight your wedding guests. Here are some of our favorite creative entertainment ideas for an NC wedding.

Invite an a cappella group for a surprise performance. The UNC Clef Hangers — Carolina’s oldest a cappella group  — are available for private events. If you and your fiancé are Tar Heel alumni, or just diehard fans, consider having the Clefs perform a song that’s special to you – like Carolina on my Mind – during your ceremony, cocktail hour, or reception. Trust us, your guests will love it!

If you’re looking to really get the party started at your wedding reception, think about bringing in a professional entertainment company, like NC Dancesport. Their staff is available to teach guests a variety of styles on-site at the reception – including ballroom, Latin, country, and West Coast swing – and they’ve got plenty of tricks up their sleeve to make your wedding day lively and help inspire your guests to get out on the dance floor!

Photo booths have become almost a standard at weddings. They provide delightful entertainment for you and your guests, and photo strips are one of the best wedding favors and keepsake memories for everyone involved. Shutterbooth is a rentable photo booth delivered and set up on-site at your event. The photos and booth can be branded to customize your experience with your wedding date, initials, or even a fun logo! Shutterbooth stands out in the photo booth world due to its elegant design, mobility, and size – it can accommodate up to 15 guest at a time!

Tesh Parekh Live Event Painting offers one of the most unique opportunities in today’s wedding industry. Tesh, an award-winning local artist, will attend your event and turn your occasion into a one-of-a-kind piece of art. He paints in both watercolors and oils to exquisitely capture your special moment on canvas, and then puts the finishing touches on the painting at the reception so that your guests (and you!) are there for the reveal. The live on-site painting will entertain your guests while they take a break from the dance floor, and you’ll have an original work of art to treasure for a lifetime.

Incorporating ideas like the ones above will definitely make your wedding one for the books!

Durham Staycation at the King’s Daughters Inn

Last month, the Southern Bride & Groom Team spent two days at the fabulous King’s Daughters Inn, located in Downtown Durham near Duke’s East campus, for a team building and planning retreat. We spent Sunday afternoon in the Inn’s gorgeous Parlour Room brainstorming ideas for the 2015 edition of SB&G.

SBG Retreat at Kings Daughters Inn sized

That evening, we headed to Café Parizade for an amazing dinner before retreating to our beautiful rooms at the King’s Daughters Inn, who generously gave each team member their own private retreat! We awoke refreshed and enjoyed a delicious breakfast courtesy of the Inn before meeting up with Robin Lin of Robin Lin Photography for our annual team photoshoot. We had a wonderful time exploring the Inn and having our photos taken, and then we headed to the SB&G office for another day of extensive planning and brainstorming. The King’s Daughters Inn is a beautiful venue for weddings, a great place for your wedding guests to stay, or a wonderful hideaway for anyone’s Durham staycation!
