Wedding Invitations 101

Traditional, elegant, glitzy, colorful - the invitation sets the tone for the wedding. A carefully chosen invitation communicates to the guests what to expect at the wedding, and is an accurate reflection of the taste and style of the bridal couple. With the vast selection available in today's market, finding invitations in just the right price range, paper weight, and type may seem a confusing task. Basic knowledge of some common printing terms, however, may make the task seem easier.

Engraving: Hand-cut or etched words and designs which achieve a raised look on the top side of the paper and slightly debossed or indented impressions on the underside of the stock.

Letterpress: Crisp text and images are pressed into cotton or hand-made papers, creating a beautiful deep impression for an heirloom look. It is a labor-intensive, 500-year-old process that is also environmentally friendly, and has resurged as a popular trend in wedding papers. The cost for these distinctive, tactile pieces is similar to engraving.

Thermography: A method of achieving raised lettering from the surface of the paper which looks very much like engraving.

Typeset: A mechanized method of setting up lettering in measured type sized for printing purposes.

Calligraphy: The art of beautiful hand writing. A recent innovation is computer generated calligraphy, wonderful for addressing your invitations, and a lovely alternative to addressing each by hand.

The cost of invitations is based on the quality and complexity of the paper, the number of lines to be printed, color of ink, embellishments, quantity to be printed and printing method. Price also depends upon the number of components or enclosures, such as RSVPs, reception cards, direction cards and save-the-dates. Utilizing good taste, fine papers, and the traditions of proper wording (your specialty invitation store will have sample wordings for every family situation), a lovely wedding invitation can be achieved within just about any budget!
