Real Weddings – Michelle and Kevin
Michelle & Kevin
October 17
OBX Asian Country Wedding Bliss
Michelle Itano & Kevin Bastian met right before the beginning of their senior year at Washington University and after a night of line dancing they hit it off. After graduation the couple moved to North Carolina. Michelle pursued her Ph.D. in Cell and Developmental Biology at the University of Carolina, while Kevin worked as a middle school teacher with the Teach For America Corps. Kevin later joined Michelle as a Tar Heel when he decided to pursue his Ph.D. in Public Policy at UNC. They bought a townhome together in Durham, and as the “Welcome to Durham” sign states: they will be “fans for life.”
The couple fell in love with the Outer Banks when they visited the area for a half-marathon with friends and family. On their next visit to OBX Kevin dropped to one knee and proposed to Michelle on the beach under an October Carolina blue sky.
It didn’t take the couple long to decide to have their wedding at OBX. They planned a beach wedding and a reception at the Rendezvous Event Home. The beautiful view from the great room inside, the attached cottage house, the great beach access, and the beautiful backyard made for the perfect location.
While they joke that the wedding was made of “all things that we like” and say they had an “OBX Asian Country Wedding.” With NC BBQ for dinner; Carolina blue accent diamonds on Michelle’s engagement and wedding band (custom designed at Goldworks in Chapel Hill, NC); hand-drawn OBX scenes on the invitations and thank-you notes; hand-folded origami cranes and Japanese figurines from Michelle’s grandma and bamboo dining war the couple joined country flair and Japanese cultural notes.
For the rest of the week Kevin and Michelle toured light houses, the Wright Brothers Memorial Museum, and relaxed with sand, sun and loved ones.
