Throwing rice as the newlyweds leave the reception is a thing of the past, but couples are still finding ways to make a splash during their grand exit. Brides and grooms are turning to more creative ways to make their exit memorable for both the couple and their guests. Here are eight creative wedding grand exit ideas.
Be sure to check with your reception venue before selecting a grand exit idea, as some will have restrictions on what is and isn’t acceptable.
1. Sparklers are one of the most popular send offs today, and that’s because they make for an exciting exit and provide for some truly amazing photo ops. Sparklers are glamorous, and add a sense of whimsy to the wedding day celebrations.
2. Eco-friendly confetti is biodegradable, so it’s easy on the environment! Give each guest a paper cone full of confetti or use typical poppers for a joyous exit.
3. Flower petals make for an exit that oozes romance. Let your guests shower your and your new husband in petals customized to match your wedding’s color scheme. Chat with your florist in advance to determine the best types of blooms available for tossing.
4. Bubbles are a classic send off favorite. They add a playful touch to your exit, but don’t leave any mess to clean up! Cute bubble bottles with a decorative ribbon can also double as favors.
5. Ribbon wands allow your guests to stay in party-mode. The streamers can be customized to match your wedding colors, and the vibrancy will make for exciting photo ops!
6. Noisemakers are perfect for a party crowd, and can be customized to fit your wedding style. Think kazoos, bells (a Southern tradition), horns, maracas, or whistles – a perfect loud and cheerful exit without any required clean up!
7. Pom pom exits are a great way to show your school spirit. If you and your beau have different sports allegiances, consider having poms representing both team’s colors and letting your guests pick a side.
8. Getaway vehicles spice up a grand exit. Think rickshaws, flashy vintage cars, horse drawn carriages, trollies or golf carts to really leave your big day in style.
If your wedding day dreams involve a totally unique, out-of-the-box venue, consider having your wedding ceremony or reception in one of NC’s beautiful museums! Give your guests a one-of-a-kind experience with exclusive access to art collections and exhibits in your very own Triangle NC museum wedding.

It’s Wedding Feature Wednesday at Southern Bride & Groom! Today, we’re excited to share Sarah and Daniel’s Real Vintage Raleigh, NC Wedding at All Saints Chapel, photographed by Revival Photography.
Sarah and Daniel — a wonderful couple with such huge hearts — married over the summer in a beautiful, vintage-inspired wedding. They held both their ceremony and reception at the historic All Saints Chapel in Downtown Raleigh, which was built in 1875. The venue provided the perfect complement to the vintage theme, and the photos from Revival Photography are absolutely breathtaking — seriously, wait ’til you see the father-daughter reveal…so unbelievably sweet! After the bride and her ‘maids finished getting ready, they took a trip to Pullen Park for some fun outdoor photos, while the groom and his guys headed to NC State’s campus. Afterwards, the couple met up at All Saints to tie the knot and celebrate with their friends and family with dancing and delicious food from The Q Shack.
We love all of the unique details, from the sweet fan programs and family photos to the bride’s retro shoes and the groom’s Southern style — this wedding is simply fantastic!

It’s Wedding Feature Wednesday at Southern Bride & Groom! Today, we’re excited to share Clair and Seth’s unique big day — they tied the knot at Edenton Street United Methodist Church, and celebrated afterwards at a totally unique reception venue — a restored warehouse. Enjoy photos of today’s Downtown Raleigh urban warehouse wedding, courtesy of Renee Sprink Photography!
Clair and Seth met when her mom hired him to cook for Clair’s birthday. Seth ended up hanging around after the party ended to visit with Clair’s family, and most definitely caught her eye! He continued to cook for several of the family’s private dinner parties, and even tutored Clair’s little sister. From there, Clair and Seth’s friendship developed and slowly evolved into true love.
Seth planned a sweet proposal that included both his and Clair’s families. He took Clair up to a rooftop bar, and when she looked down, she saw her dad and sister. When she looked at Seth confused, he told her it was because it was a special day, and dropped to one knee! Of course, Clair said yes, and the couple celebrated their engagement with their families before heading off to a romantic dinner for two.
They tied the knot at their church, Edenton Street United Methodist Church, and celebrated afterwards with a reception in a renovated urban warehouse in Downtown Raleigh. The couple felt that most of the reception spaces they visited just didn’t “fit” right, so they went a totally unique route and chose a private space that they could customize to their taste! Because it was such an unconventional reception space, the couple and their vendors had to get creative and invest a lot of work, but it turned out beautifully.
Clair was inspired by Kate Spade’s classic, preppy designs, and the two decided to plan their wedding around that sort of theme, complimented by a black, white and gold color palette. They used black and white striped table cloths, and accented the space with lots of gold details. The couple selected Renee Sprink Photography after Clair fell in love with her images from a close friend’s wedding, and other members of the SB&G Family helped make their wedding day perfect, including CE Rental and Island Sound.

Hosting your wedding at a venue that also has onsite accommodations is an absolutely fantastic option for both you and your guests. The entire wedding weekend becomes an event; you can reserve a block of rooms and have all of your friends and family together in one location!
Here in the Triangle Area of North Carolina, and its surrounding towns and destination locations, there are a ton of options for venues with onsite accommodations — especially hotels and quaint bed and breakfasts — so one is sure to fit your exact needs.
There’a reason hotels and B&Bs are some of the most popular choices for wedding venues — Triangle NC hotel weddings are convenient, cost-efficient and customizable.
Convenience at it’s Finest
The coordination of a hotel wedding is incredibly simple. They typically have hosted their fair share of weddings, so they know what they’re doing! Hotels will have great vendor recommendations, because they’ve probably worked with just about every wedding pro in town. It’s also incredibly convenient for your guests — especially out-of-towners — because your ceremony, reception and accommodations are all in one location. There’s no need to worry about transportation, parking, or the logistics of having separate venues for your ceremony and reception.
Because hotels often have wedding packages, many of the vendors you would normally need to hire elsewhere are included. Most hotels and B&Bs will require you to use their catering service, so choose somewhere with terrific food and leave the meal planning to them! Many hotels also offer complimentary shuttle service, including airport pick-up and drop-off for your out of town guests to make the weekend go even smoother.
Unique & Customizable
Hotels and B&Bs usually have several options for event spaces. If you want to have your ceremony and reception at the hotel, you can either flip the space between events, or choose completely different locations — like hosting a garden ceremony followed by a ballroom reception. The venues normally have a variety of beautiful spaces — like ballrooms with elegant chandeliers, perfectly manicured gardens, and cozy, more intimate rooms for smaller weddings. You can add your own twists to the traditional hotel spaces by incorporating decorations, specialty lighting, and floral arrangements.

Country clubs are one of the most popular choices for wedding venues here in the South, and it’s no coincidence — the Triangle NC country club wedding is the perfect combination of elegance and simplicity. Here in the Triangle Area of North Carolina, we have a wide range of clubs — from golf clubs to city clubs — that make for beautiful, classic and convenient wedding event spaces.
Clubs offer an upscale wedding experience for a wide range of budgets, with the added perk of ease throughout the wedding planning process — most clubs provide basic rental needs like tables, chairs, and linens with their wedding packages. Most importantly, the reception food — the most expensive part of every wedding event — is part of the package, which saves money and planning stress. The best news of all is that all of the SB&G clubs are top-notch when it comes to the dining experience!
The stand-out settings are yet another added appeal of a club wedding. Country clubs have beautiful ballrooms, clubhouses, and picturesque golf courses and grounds; while our area city clubs offer stunning sweeping views. All are able to host both wedding ceremonies and receptions, and most have additional smaller rooms that are perfect for other wedding events, such as bridal luncheons or rehearsal dinners.
Not a private club member? Not to worry, all of the SB&G clubs are open to non-members. Some have member sponsorship programs, but the club staff is happy to help coordinator on your behalf!
University & City Clubs
The Carolina Club in Chapel Hill is a beautiful club located on the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s campus. It can accommodate weddings from the most intimate to the most elaborate, and the team is experienced in helping couples plan the perfect wedding. The University Club, located in Durham’s tallest building, offers breathtaking views of Durham to Chapel Hill. The staff at the University Club will guide you from your first tasting with their fantastic culinary team all the way to your wedding day. The NC State University Club in Raleigh on NC State’s campus is a university club, but actually has a golf course as well, and is currently undergoing renovations to expand the venue and its offerings.

Country Clubs & Golf Clubs
The Triangle and its surrounding area is also home to many traditional country clubs. Governors Club in Chapel Hill is a secluded venue with beautiful ceremony and reception spaces, and an award-winning 27-hole golf course. Brier Creek Country Club in Raleigh offers all-inclusive packages to make your wedding planning process a breeze, and has an absolutely picture-perfect landscape! Just outside Raleigh, in Cary, NC, is MacGregor Downs Country Club, which has stunning views of Lake MacGregor, and on-site event coordinators to assist you in creating a beautiful, customized event. Prestonwood Country Club, also in Cary, can accommodate up to 1,000 guests, and will certainly wow them with a dramatic staircase, crystal chandeliers and vaulted ceilings. In Durham, Croasdaile Country Club has been making wedding memories for over a decade. Their catering team works one-on-one with couples to craft the perfect menu. The Washington Duke Inn & Golf Club in Durham is one of the city’s premiere wedding locations. With indoor and outdoor options, and a staff that handles every detail, the Inn offers an unforgettable wedding experience.
Pinehurst is a quaint destination town just an hour outside of the Triangle — perfect for a wedding weekend extravaganza, especially for any golf lovers! The Resort boasts more than 2,000 acres, multiple event locations, and a full-service spa. Even if you are planning an NC beach wedding, you can still have that country club vibe! There are several clubs on the Outer Banks — visit the Outer Banks Wedding Association for more details. And finally, one of our favorite venues in the state is the Shoals Club on Bald Head Island off the NC coast. This upscale venue is surrounded by ocean views, and is perfect for brides who love the beach, but don’t want to sacrifice the elegance of a country club wedding.

Emily and Pat tied the knot at The Garden on Millbrook on September 29, 2012. The couple met on a blind date set up by a mutual friend. After dating for a while, Emily and Pat returned to the restaurant where they’d had their first date, and Pat popped the question! Of course, Emily said yes, and they began planning their fall wedding.
Emily is a wedding planner with Your Special Day Weddings & Special Events, so she knew many local venues. She wanted a fun place with great customer service and delicious food, where she and Pat could have both their ceremony and reception. She knew The Garden on Millbrook would be the perfect choice!
A color palette of navy, raspberry and gold was carried throughout the wedding day in the invitations, linens, attire and even the favors. The couple used Southern Bride & Groom and the bride’s knowledge of local wedding professionals to make their big day perfect, and decided to use many members of the SB&G Family, including: The Garden on Millbrook, Shawn Schindler of Your Special Day Weddings & Special Events, The English Garden, CE Rental, Anfesa’s Jewelers, and Shutterbooth!

The WRAL Azalea Gardens are a beautiful Raleigh, NC wedding venue with a rich local history. The stunning, tranquil setting of the gardens combined with the history of giving back to the community make this venue extraordinarily special — we are so lucky to have something so wonderful right here in the heart of North Carolina!
History & Community Involvement
Capitol Broadcasting Company founder AJ Fletcher created the WRAL Azalea Gardens in 1959, three years after WRAL-TV went on air in Raleigh. Fletcher loved azaleas and finding new varieties to enjoy, so he decided to share that passion with the general public. He personally oversaw the installation of a thousand azaleas on the 5-acre property to create the gardens!
Today, the WRAL Azalea Gardens showcase a full range of flowering and non-flowering plants that are typical in Southern landscaping. Featured plants included azaleas, dogwoods, rhododendrons and hydrangeas. In 2000, the gardens underwent major renovations to accommodate the TV studio expansion — a new fountain and walkway overlooking the gardens were installed in front of the studios, and the new architecture was surrounded with planters and flowerbeds to blend in seamlessly with the natural landscape. In 2003, the WRAL Gardens received the Tree & Landscape Conservation award from the 21st Annual Sir Walter Raleigh Awards for Community Appearance. Today, Fletcher’s grandson, Jim Goodmon, oversees the development and upkeep of the beautiful gardens.
Each year, WRAL sponsors the annual WRAL Azalea Celebration, where WRAL-TV gives away over 10,000 azaleas to more than 100 non-profits all over the state of North Carolina in an effort to beautify the community. To apply to be a part of the celebration, go here.
Beautiful Wedding Ceremonies & Bridal Portraits
The WRAL Azalea Gardens offer a stunning, serene space for outdoor wedding ceremonies. Reservations for weddings may be made for either an 11 a.m. or 2 p.m. ceremony on weekends from March to September. Wedding parties will have access to the gardens for setup 90 minutes prior to the ceremony. Up to 100 chairs are provided, and this fall, the gardens are renovating the restrooms and dressing rooms! The renovations should be completed by March of 2014, just in time for the start of wedding season!
Mid-March to mid-May is the time of year the azaleas are at their most beautiful, with the third weekend in April being the peak. The gardens also offer free reservations for bridal portrait sessions. To reserve your wedding date at the stunning WRAL Azalea Gardens, go here, and to reserve your bridal portrait session time, go here.
