The NACE Experience 2013 Conference took place last week in Chicago. I had the privilege of attending on behalf of Southern Bride & Groom, along with 14 other members of our local Triangle NACE Chapter (a very impressive presence, I must say!)
NACE, the National Association of Catering and Events, is the premiere professional association that addresses all aspects of the catering industry. Nationally there are over 4,000 individual members in 46 active chapters, and SB&G has been a member of our Triangle Chapter for about 15 years. We at SB&G feel it is very important to invest in continuing education so we can remain cutting-edge and on top of all that is going on in our industry, as well as to connect with professionals who are at the top of their field.
The highlight of the NACE Experience this year for me was the opening party – a “white party” that was hosted by the Chicago NACE Chapter. Various Chicago restaurants and caterers had food stations around the room. There were also live food and drink stations, a cotton candy machine, and a vodka-martini luge. They really went all out to welcome us to Chicago, and it was a fantastic event!
This set us up for the conference, in which we enjoyed educational break-out sessions on topics ranging from marketing and PR to food and wedding design trends. Regarding design, we heard a lot about emerald – the Pantone color of the year – which is huge in weddings right now. This goes well with the lush green foliage that is so popular in table decor.
The overall consensus that I’ve heard at educational seminars this year (as well as from our local wedding professionals) is that the biggest thing in weddings is still personalization. Best put by The Wedding Guys, more so than attempting to cram a million “trends” into your big day, try to focus on the STYLE of your event, and connect this to your story as a couple. The more of yourself that you put into your wedding, the more the experience will feel genuine for you and your guests.
A SENSORY EXPERIENCE
I’ll leave you with this tip from The Wedding Guys: When planning your wedding, start by identifying the “FEELING” that you want your wedding to have. Then, address each of the five senses one by one with that feeling in mind. Save the look wedding for last- it should easily fall into place if you’ve covered the other senses first!
Throughout the month of October, Triangle NACE is are running a membership drive. New members will receive $100 savings off the annual fee, and returning members (over 3 months lapsed) will receive a savings of $50.
Being a member, of NACE is a great opportunity to give your business a competitive edge and company representatives the opportunity to network with some of our industry’s leading vendors. Our Triangle chapter also offers fabulous educational components at each meeting, in which our members are able to learn from leading figures in the catering and event community. SB&G has been a part of NACE for 10 years, and we have found it a fabulous way to get involved with our local event community, and to stay abreast of new catering and event trends.

SB&G had a great time at Triangle NACE”s annual fundraiser Tuesday night. The Food Shuttle Soiree benefited the Inter-Faith Food Shuttle, a wonderful organization that works to end hunger in our community.
The NACE fundraiser was a fabulous fun party held at Bay 7. Wonderful food was provided by Catering Works, Parizade, Centerplate, The Catering Company, and the Inter-Faith Food Shuttle. A lavish dessert bar was provided by Sweet Memories. Entertainment included the Casablanca Orchestra via East Coast Entertainment, a musician, and Shutterbooth. I snapped a couple shots on my phone but the real photographer was F8 Photo Studios, and her photos will be posted on the Triangle NACE Facebook page soon!
SB&G is proud to be a part of this wonderful organization and to support this cause. If you”d like to join NACE, I will attest that it is a wonderful thing for anyone in the event or wedding industry to be a part of, with inspirational professionals and educational components. Hope to see y”all there soon!
