Southern Bride & Groom Editor Jenna Parks Shares Bridal Fashion Trends from NY Bridal Market 2018
After a whirlwind trip to NY Bridal Market, I’m back in the South and fully immersed in our little world of production – sifting through real NC weddings and beautiful editorials for the next magazine edition. But I’m still reeling from the high of all the amazing wedding dresses that I saw at NY bridal fashion week. We have gobs of gorgeous images captured by Renee Sprink of Renee Sprink Photography, who joined me for the bridal market trip. Since there are far too many beautiful wedding dress ideas to share in one post, I am going to kick off our NY bridal market coverage with a 2018 wedding dress trends report. From minimalist clean lines to daringly bold, we’re outlining some of the bridal fashion styles that are oh so hot right now!
A note to our NC Brides – Most of the shows and appointments we attended at NY Bridal Market were couture designers carried by the A-list of NC bridal boutiques that SB&G recommends. If you go gaga for one of this year’s wedding dress trends, or are interested in wearing one of these bridal gown designers, please take note of which NC bridal salon carries them. Even if they don’t have that exact dress, they might be able to order it for you.
2018 Wedding Dress Trends Report: the Year of the Bridal Cape
Ok so it might take a little longer to become mainstream in the South, but on the runways, 2018 is the year of the bridal cape. Uber modern and fashion forward brides now have the option to ditch the traditional veil in favor of channeling their inner super-hero.
The most wow-factor wedding cape we saw all weekend was hands down this jeweled stunner from the brilliant Ines di Santo. Matched with the sassy pant suit too – I mean, come on! This look is FIRE! Find some of Ines di Santo’s exquisite wedding dresses at Alexia’s Bridal in Raleigh.
The hooded sheer cape by Allison Webb is a look we can get behind – it is a nod to the ancient symbolism of shrouding one’s head with a veil, but with a more feminist vibe.
For those who are not ready to go full throttle with the cape, there are some wedding dress designs in 2018 that mimic the look – for example these flutter sleeves with a cape back attached. Also by Alexandra Grecco, available at Gilded.
Cool Wedding Bomber Jackets and Wedding Cardigans
Ok so lace overlays to cover bare shoulders and décolletage during the wedding ceremony is nothing new. But we are loving the creative accessories from street fashion that are coming to wedding gowns, and had to share a couple.
We’re dying over this fabulous bridal bomber jacket by Allison Webb.
“Bridal cardigans” have never been so beautiful as this impeccable design by Sareh Nouri – Carried by Alexia’s Bridal.
High Neck Accents
This year, we’ve got a new area that we must not forget to adorn: the neck. And we don’t just mean jewelry. Designers are creating neck flourishes in their wedding gowns, and we love how they create an elongated, graceful bridal look.
Hayley Paige is all about the latest wedding dress trends, in fact, she is often at the forefront of developing them! We love this oh-so-subtle choker accent which is actually part of her gown. This is from the Blush by Hayley Paige 2018 collection, which is carried in NC by Tre Bella Bridal.
Minimalist Wedding Dresses with Clean Lines
If you are a classic gal, do not fear. The other style that continues to rage on in 2018 wedding dress trends is minimalism. Fashion with clean lines is timeless, and that carries on in bridal looks today.
The queen of clean lines is Sareh Nouri. While Sareh always brings lots of playful and romantic looks to her collection, her designs are always rooted in timeless, graceful structure. Look for Sareh Nouri at Alexia’s in Raleigh.
Wedding Dresses with Off the Shoulder Sleeves
Off the shoulder sleeves started trending in wedding fashion a few years ago, and now it is officially becoming a mainstay. But I just couldn’t do a 2018 wedding dress trends report without mentioning it, because I saw them in so many forms and on so many different styles.
And of course, capped off-the-shoulder sleeves pair perfectly with a romantic tulle gown! Blush by Hayley Paige is available at Tre Bella Bridal.
Sareh Nouri’s gowns are modern romance perfected! Available at Alexia’s.
Wedding Dress with Subtle Sensual Slit
Wedding fashion today is doing an amazing job of balancing class, style and sensuality. The leg-revealing slit is one wedding dress trend that we are digging!
Alexandra Grecco mixes romantic and sweet with a peek of that long leg, and we love it! Designer carried at Gilded Bridal.
Pleats for my Wedding, Please!
Preppy pleats are making their way into wedding fashion and it couldn’t be more darling!
At Left- Wandering around the One Fine Day bridal event, we met the coolest Brooklyn designer, Catherine Kowalski Bridal, who had this fabulously flattering mixed texture gown with pleats!
At Right – we spotted a Modern Trousseau gown in the salon that will actually be appearing in SB&G 2018. This gown is available at Tre Bella Bridal – Looks like they already read the SB&G 2018 wedding dress trends report!
Suzanne Neville is rocking the pleats in her new collection and we can’t get enough! Available at Traditions by Anna.
It’s not just on the Red Carpet; In Wedding Fashion, Sheer is Still Here!
From subtle to overt, slinky sheath gowns to two piece pants suits, sheer fashion is still here, and it wouldn’t be a 2018 wedding dress trends report without mentioning it!
This exquisite fabric manages to be modest, elegant and sheer at the same time! By Flora, which is carried at Alexia’s.
This delicate applique looks amazing over netting and skin! Alexandra Grecco is carried by Gilded Bridal.
Hayley Paige creates the most effortlessly chic sheer gowns. Hayley Paige can be found at Coastal Knot Bridal.
For the diva bride, ruby colored sheer sass! By Lazaro, which is carried at Tre Bella Bridal.
Tassels are Trending
On both classic white wedding gown shapes and offbeat bold colors, tassels are working their way into bridal fashion as a fun flair – and we are all about it!
Hayley Paige’s new collection is testing the waters with tassels. Find her gorgeous gowns in NC at Coastal Knot Bridal in Wilmington and Raleigh.
Catherine Kowalski Bridal brings us this Japanese fashion inspired kimono look with accent tassels. Hello, wish list!
Velvet Wedding Fashion
The wide array of exquisite fabrics is always mind-blowing to me, as well as how bridal gown fabrics converge with street fashion. Velvet isn’t just back for your winter turtlenecks – but also for your winter weddings!
Tara LaTour WOW’ed us with this dramatic piece. The angles and sculpture are accented with black velvet! Tara LaTour is carried at Gilded Bridal.
Giant Sculpted Ballgown Skirts
Ballgown skirts are back in bridal fashion and they are bigger, and more intricately sculpted than ever!
Ines di Santo is a master at artful design. Her romantic collection has our hearts. Carried by Alexia’s
Hayley Paige is known for her giant full skirts! And we love the layers and swirls in this year’s collection. Blush by Hayley Paige is carried by Tre Bella Bridal.
At last week’s NY Bridal Market, Hayley Paige revealed some of her most romantic and breathtaking skirt sculpture to date! Carried by Coastal Knot.
Wedding Dress Sleeve Veils
We’ve come full circle on our 2018 wedding dress trends report. We are back to another replacement for the bridal veil. Sleeves with trains are a new trend that we are loving in fashion today. They are usually made separate so they can be taken off after the ceremony. They are absolutely stunning!
Straight out of Cinderella’s carriage… in 2018! This breathtaking masterpiece is from Ines di Santo, which is available at Alexia’s.
This jacket meets bridal sleeve veil combo is dazzling! By Lazaro, which is carried at Tre Bella Bridal.
Another show stopper from Hayley Paige, who is carried at Coastal Knot Bridal.
